Dr. Khalid Aziz has been working with families and babies for more than 30 years. As a neonatologist he has seen a culture shift from neonatal units being treated as critical care areas to being considered as babies' bedrooms, where parental presence is welcomed. More and more we are realizing that many of the best things in life—conversation, human touch, closeness of loved ones, and physical and emotional nourishment—are just as important for preterm and sick babies as they are for the rest of us. Khalid is a strong advocate for the integration of families into the day-to-day running of neonatal units, and is a co-investigator on the Family Integrated Care study in hospitals in Alberta.
